From President Lish:
“
We had another
successful year with over 130 entries
participating in the 5K or 10K run walk, the
day started off with a thick fog which lifted to
the sounds of the long
-
winded hooter in the
footsteps of the runners and the walkers. After
keeping up the pace we made it to the top, and the 360
o
views from coast to coast was amazing, lots of happy faces
and laughter at the top. Then it was the trek back down to
where we started a couple of hours ago, although many did it
in a much shorter time. After handing our numbers back in,
we headed to the KSA for refreshments from the PTA, Mark
and Pam, the Little Kiwi Coffee Cart and also the bar at the
KSA.
Prizegiving began at 12.30, where our fastest competitors,.
oldest competitors and volunteers received some pretty
awesome prizes! Then there was the handing out of the spot
prizes where again there were many happy faces, young and
old. This amazing event couldn't happen without the
competitors being keen to join in and paying for their tickets,
our wonderful sponsors giving what they can
-
no matter the
size of the donation they are always appreciated. Also our
marshals, helpers and parking expertise, making sure we
listen and do the right thing. Thank you to the Kauri dieback
man looking after our ngahere. The biggest thank you goes
out to the KSA Top of The Rock team who always put in a
110% to make sure that everything runs so smoothly every
year ... we'll see you all again next year around this time.

Northland shearer Toa Henderson has claimed back

victories at the prestigious Golden Shears, winning the Open
shearing title in Masterton for the second consecutive year.
Toa edged out Scotland
’
s Gavin Mutch by just half a point
in a closely fought final, with quality proving the difference
despite Mutch finishing his 20 sheep slightly faster.
The win capped off a remarkable event for New Zealand at
the World Shearing and Woolhandling Championships
2026, where the home team dominated, securing five out of
six titles.
New Zealand made history by winning all three team events
-
machine shearing, blades shearing, and woolhandling
-
marking the first time any nation has achieved the clean
sweep at a world championship.
Henderson also featured strongly in the World
Championships machine shearing final, recording the fastest
time of 16 minutes 40.349 seconds. Although he finished
runner
-
up on points, it demonstrated his speed and
consistency against a world
-
class field.
A week later at Kumeu Show Henderson won the Open
final, completing a repeat of the Golden Shears

double he celebrated 12 months ago.

WEATHER
FEBRUARY
Not a lot of rain to report about in
February compared to January.
At our place in February we had
395.5mm less than in January with a
mere
57mm over 8 days
.
Derek had
55mm over 12 days
in the
Hakaru Valley.
I personally don
’
t mind the warmer
weather, but the really long hot days
were a bit taxing this year.
From the 3rd to the 5th February we
got 21mm, then from the 13th to the
16th we got 34.5mm and on the 20th,
we got 1.5mm.
The
highest rainfall recorded at
our place for February was in
2023 with 702mm when Cyclone
Gabrielle came to visit.
The least rainfall recorded for February
was in
2020 with a recording of
7.5mm over only 3 days
.
Did you know
-
that no piece of paper
can be folded in half more than 7 times.
Personally I think it might depend on
the size of the paper to start with –
give
it a go.

EASTER REFLECTION.
Easter, for me
, isn't just about chocolate eggs, or long weekend breaks.
Don't get me wrong, I love chocolate, but it's also a time that holds a
deeper, meaning
-
a profound time of renewal, hope, reflection, and
celebrating the resurrection of Jesus as victory of light over darkness and
love over death. It invites us to embrace new beginnings, let go of past
mistakes, and find strength in God's unconditional love.
Easter encourages all of us to live as "Resurrection
people" not bound by sin, fear or despair, but living
in the joyful presence of our Risen Lord Jesus. On
the Cross Jesus demonstrated a deep, abiding love
that nothing can separate us from.
It's an invitation to a new beginning, leaving
behind the past, and embracing a life renewed by
Grace
. Jesus' resurrected body reminds us that our
own traumas can be transformed by hope.
That's why in John's gospel Jesus says:
"
I am the Resurrection and the Life. Anyone who
believes in me will live
."

ANZAC
Anzac Day is a day of
commemoration
.
We are not celebrating war, but rather
the service and the sacrifice that took
place during war, armed conflict, and
peacekeeping. The old law was very
specific: it commemorated those who
served in World War 1, World War 2,
the South African War, Malaya/
Borneo, South Vietnam, and those who
gave their lives for New Zealand, the
British Empire and Commonwealth.
The new law
is far broader and
designed to cover all those who served,
even if not members of the Armed
Forces,
Anzac
Day
now
commemorates "all those who have
served New Zealand in time of war
and in warlike conflicts (including
those who died), and of all those who
have died in New Zealand military
service, or whose death was
connected
with
New
Zealand
military service.
”
These are important
changes.

POSSUM TIME
Possums breed in March/
April and again in Sept/Oct
.
During this time, they
’
re really
promiscuous and are out
socialising and moving around a
lot. With more animals moving
through an area, well
-
placed,
well
-
baited traps are more likely
to intercept them and reduce
local numbers quickly.
Possum control is ~80% pre
-
feeding and visual luring to get
them interested, and ~20%
actual trapping.
Time to make your traps more attractive: refresh them with
peanut butter, cinnamon
-
dusted fruit (apples, pears, citrus),
raw mutton fat, and molasses, and check them more
regularly!
Flour blaze (flour mixed with icing sugar and vanilla or
cinnamon) is a scented and visual lure. Shake it around in an
old milk bottle and spread it around to leave a visible
scented trail to your trap or bait station. Possums can see
white better at night, and once it
’
s on their breath, paws, fur
and scat, other possums will pick up on it as a food source.

ARCHIE BULL HALL
Election
of

Chairman,
Secretary and Treasurer.
We are looking for people with new
ideas and energy to join and help to
move Kaiwaka forward.
Come along and be a part of making
Kaiwaka a great destination and place
to grow.
Now is the time to start planning the
future as Kaiwaka will be going
through an interesting time over the
next 6 to 15 years with the new
expressway playing a major part.
We know that the
Warkworth to Te
Hana section should be completed in
about 6 to 7 years
, which means that
Kaiwaka will be the first town for
travellers to
’
fuel up
’
when travelling
north.
So we need to make the most of this
before the next section between Te
Hana and Brynderwyn opens. This
section is probably as far out as another
10 years, by which time we should have
a town that people would leave the
expressway for a break.
We need to start working towards
this now. Join the movement.
We are always looking for people to
help with projects already on the go
such as
Skate Park, Pontoon,
Lighting around town, annual
Lantern Festival and Christmas in
the Park.

Driver Mentoring
is building up again. We are unsure at this stage, what the
new regulations will mean for our young drivers. However, we will continue to
progress them through the stages as we can. It is interesting to note that more of
them want to sit their Restricted in a Manual car (ours is automatic.) I can
understand their wish to do this as having a Manual restricted means they can
drive either. If you happen to be following a person with an
“
L
”
plate, please give
them the space they deserve. We all had to learn once (and for many of us,
getting our licence was much easier than it is today.)
We have heard that
Penny Worsfold
has settled in
with her host family in Argentina. I am sure her efforts
to learn Spanish, prior to leaving NZ, has been very
beneficial.
Amy Weber,
the Student rep to the Board gave a very
interesting presentation to her fellow students about the
time she spent in January at the Auckland Uni campus
while attending the Rotary National Science and
Technology Forum (alongside 168 Year 13s from
throughout NZ.) To quote Amy,
“
the forum, academic
modules and the tech visits were all very enlightening in helping me find my
specific passion for science.
”
One piece of advice that stuck with Amy was
“
Be
comfortable with the uncomfortable, for it means you are growing.
”
We look forward to the path that Amy follows in the future.
We continue to look for
new members
, so if you are interested in coming on
board to help us in any way, please don
’
t hesitate to get in touch with me,

continuous gas bottles theft, the
extended cleaning hours, and many
other factors such as other gyms in the
region comparing membership price and
having no shower facilities. The
outcome was in order to keep the
showers our membership would need to
increase by at least double current price
to make it financially viable.
MEMBERSHIPS: We are currently
taking limited new memberships weekly
and reassess weekly taking into
consideration busy times etc and how
many are using it. This system seems to
be working so far.
RENEWALS: For our first cohort who
originally had a silver tag, June is
renewal time. There is only one of me,
please don
’
t leave it till the end of June
as you may lose access for a short
while. Please start renewals late April so
it
’
s easier to manage. I only do
memberships once a week on weekends.
Thank you, members, please keep
looking after the gym and putting our
weights away and keeping the place
tidy. Remember it
’
s all of our gym ~

KAIWAKA SCHOOL
News from the Principal
: ‘
Thank you to all the
parents who help with the
breakfast club.
We need a few
more people to open the doors at 8:00am, set up the breakfast
area, serve food to the children, and help with clean up. The
number of children attending has grown from 7 to over 30 on
some days, so your support means a lot. If you can help, even
once a week, please get in touch with Whaea Ripeka or
myself so we can find a time that works for you.
Our annual Try
-
athlon
was a lot of fun, with so many
children taking part. I even saw some parents joining in the
run! It was great to have the children from Small Pukekos
with us –
their teachers said they enjoyed visiting our school.
We want to keep improving the event so please let me know if
you have any feedback. Thank you to
all the whānau who helped out on the
day. Everything went more smoothly
because of your support.
SCHOOL POOL:
We know it has
been frustrating for both families and
staff that the pool was closed for much
of March. A lot of people have been
working together to get the pool treated
and running again This problem has
cost the school a lot of unexpected money. We are offering families a partial
refund of half the cost of the pool key.
Our planned Swimming Sports Day will now be held at the end of Term 4. We
would love for families to come and help on the day.

NORTHLAND CENTRE CHAMPIONSHIPS 2026
Northland
’
s Sheep Dog Trial Centre Championships took place from 13th –
15th
March, at the Hobson Club, Tangiteroria. A Centre is a big event for any club,
this was also a celebration of their retiring secretary Joy West after 50 years in
the role, and 24 years as Northland Centre secretary, serving alongside our own
Tony Hargreaves when he was President.
Fletcher Sceats saw great success at the trial with his
huntaway dog Sarge, after his first centre win last year,
he stayed consistent taking out the straight hunt event this
year. Fletcher spent the last few years working at Oneriri
station in Kaiwaka, he
’
s a member of the Molesworth
club here in Kaiwaka, where his grandfather Bob Sceats
is patron. Fletcher is involved with several of the local
clubs in the area, also helping with the Rodney club in
Kaipara Flats.
Fletcher and Sarge have featured consistently in top re-
sults at trials this season. Fletcher
’
s seen success with
Leo (another of his huntaway dogs), and while Fletcher
was the youngest in the runoff (final), he
’
s becoming a
bit of a talking point in the huntaway field of sheep dog
trials.
Other
experienced
local
trialists
featured well in
the champion-
ships with Peter
Walker
and
Cooper, Scott McRae and Rain in the
huntaway run off. Scott
’
s heading dogs
Al and Charlie representing in the head-
ing finals.
Dog trials in Northland is about two
thirds of the way through the season,
with the more local trials yet to come,
Maungakaramea and Molesworth in
mid
-
April, all these prior to the South
Island and then New Zealand Champi-
onships in May. The Molesworth club
is proud to have President Scott McRae
selected as the judge for the straight
hunt, held at the Te Aute club, in the
Hawkes Bay in late May.
If you
’
re interested in watching a tri-
al locally, the Molesworth SDTC
event is on the 17th and 18th April,
616 Oneriri Road, Kaiwaka.

BOOK REVIEW
I've recently read
The Goblin Emperor by Katherine
Addison.
"
Maia, the youngest, half-
goblin
son of the Emperor, has lived his
entire life in exile, distant from the Imperial
Court and the deadly intrigue that suffuses
it. But when his father and three sons in line
for the throne are killed in an “accident”,
he has no choice but to take his place as the
only surviving rightful heir. Surrounded by
sycophants and overwhelmed by the
burdens of his new life, he can trust nobody.
Amid the swirl of plots to depose him, offers
of arranged marriages, and the spectre of
the unknown
conspirators, he must
quickly adjust to life as the Goblin Emperor
." This was a lovely
story, a very easy read
-
I sometimes find this sort of book a
bit hard
-
going as I get to know the new world it inhabits
-
and I'm looking forward to reading the other books in this
world, which are on our shelves waiting to be borrowed.
